"If this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is.”

God bless Richard and Judy. The UK couple who have inspired an epidemic of reading – like Oprah, only hipper, more charming, and certainly more fun – have placed our Waiting for Columbus on their “100 Books of the decade list.”

Here’s the blurb on this Richard and Judy list: “Take a look and get inspired from their literary choices, which span across the last ten years. You might find an old favourite, which nudges you into reading it for another time and reminds you once again why it’s your favourite, or perhaps you’ll discover a new must-read to recommend to your friends from this list of page-turners.”

In the words of the late Kurt Vonnegut: “If this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is.”

P.S. Does this seem repulsively egotistical? I mean, apart from the goddamn shrine to Trofimuk this web site has become?!?!? Blah, blah, blah it’ all about Trofimuk…blah, blah, blah…Look! Something else wonderful has happened around his Columbus book. Blah, blah, blah…oh and have we mentioned? — it’s all about Trofimuk. Fuck!!!! I mean, the site is to promote Trofimuk’s writing but it’s supposed to be “about” writing too. Okay, admittedly, the group of writers on this list is really quite stunning and there’s Trofimuk — the little high-plains Canadian writer among them, amongst them, with them. I think I’ll let Pinsky take over this site — he’ll inject some irreverent, and foul-mouthed chaos onto these pages. Do ya a world of good….maybe. And maybe it’ll just get you in a mess of trouble. Maybe at the end of it all, there’ll be an offer that will makes your knees weak…your heart pound…your hands sweat. And then what?

I think all of this is well deserved. How is the movie deal coming along? We saw your book in London, Athens, Paris and Bangkok bookshoppes. How incredible is that?

As for the talking about yourself thing: what else is a blog for, anyway? The only reason I bother to read blogs is because they usually reveal something interesting about the person keeping them and they are more often than not personal. I love that. Keep up the narcissism. It’s awesome.

Forget that you are self-important because these mountains don’t care about you. They have a long view, in which you are insignifiant. They only pay attention to glaciers, and love. Love will always catch them because they don’t understand it. So fill up on love if you want to be noticed by the mountains. -Thomas Trofimuk, in a letter to Paulette Dube

Dear Thomas,
officially, the mountains still exist. Today, they are however, obscured by gale force winds and sharpshifting snow. There is no way to walk out here in safety let alone comfort, so we subsist on stark memories. Caution: rationing of said memories is encouraged, because we don’t know when there will be a break in the weather.

Dear Paulette,
officially, the snow — 18 floors above the city streets — is this-way-and-that. Today, the snow is confused and the clouds meld so perfectly with the land. The UV rating is 2, which is very low. The temperature is MINUS 22C and the wind-chill is brutal. The snow is warming things up. HA! Tonight there will be snow and clouds and itt will feel warmer than…last night. Writing about Mexico is not so easy today. I can barely remember the air, and Caribean breezes…but if I turn the heat up and drink enough tequila…maybe.
