"Inventory of the New World" and more...

The Big Brained Girls Book Club was in fine form last night. Bright, bawdy and brash, they served up a splendid offering of food, and wine and conversation. I had a wonderful time. And I even think the group is going to come down and hang out with the Raving Poets in a couple weeks.

If you’re in Edmonton next week, check this out:

“Inventory of the New World”

This Thursday’s (November 12th) Literary Saloon offers up an “Inventory of the New World” with local novelist Thomas Trofimuk and Vancouver poet Marguerite Pigeon.

October’s inaugural Literary Saloon with Anansi authors Lisa Moore, Shani Mootoo and Karen Solie was a rousing success, and the November event promises to be every bit as raucous. On November 12th, Thomas Trofimuk will read from his acclaimed novel Waiting for Columbus and Vancouver poet and bon vivant Marguerite Pigeon drops in to read from her mesmerizing collection Inventory.

But that’s not all. In honour of the ‘new world’ flavours of Thomas Trofimuk’s novel, the Literary Saloon will also be featuring. . .

• “New world” chocolate tasting, courtesy of Edmonton chocolatier Kerstin Roos of Kerstin’s Chocolates / Chocophilia fame. (http://www.kerstinschocolates.com/)

• The first of our ongoing lecture series Skills for the Apocalypse. This month’s skill, in keeping with the south-of-the-border theme: Ten Minute Salsa Lesson with of Etown Salsa! (http://www.etownsalsa.com/)

Door opens at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m. Admission is $5. The ARTery is located at 9535 Jasper Avenue.

John Chalmers’ Navigator Brothers

Coming up in the next few days, our good friend John Chalmers, is rolling out a multimedia presentation on his new book, Navigator Brothers.

On Friday, November 6, at 7:00 pm at the Strathcona County Library, 2020 Sherwood Drive, Sherwood Park.

On Monday, November 9, at 7:30 pm at Audreys Books, 10702 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton.

John’s talk will be a highly-illustrated account of “the story behind the story,” about how Navigator Brothers emerged as a book based on the memoirs of his father and his father’s youngest brother. John’s late father, Jack, was an RCAF navigation instructor in Canada during the war. John found his memoirs a few years after he died. Then he found the letters that his father’s brother, Alfred, wrote home from overseas to their mother. Alfred was attached to RAF 101 Squadron as an Lancaster navigator and was killed with all crew on their eighth operation. They are buried in Denmark.

“Chalmers has successfully woven the story of both his relatives into an informative, descriptive and altogether absorbing account of life lived in the wartime RCAF, both in Canada and at a U.K. bomber base. Recommended reading.” —Winter 2009 issue of Airforce Magazine
