Celebrate the little victories!!!
March 12, 2007
S ending out poems and stories to the literary magazines is a great way to stay sharp and to keep pushing the edges of your craft. The rejections keep you humble and the acceptances give you little things to celebrate – and the little victories must be celebrated!!! They must be. So, today is a double. I was rejected by Malahat Review (I’ve never had anything accepted by these guys but I try, I try, I try), and I was accepted by a Halifax Literary magazine called All Rights Reserved. They took two poems for their next issue – “Looking Italian” and “Shoes.”
So tonight, after bashing out another section of wall (the guy who built this house put two layers of drywall everywhere…what is that about?). The living room looks huge now. And soon, hardwood flooring. We’ve only changed our minds about ten times as to the type and style of wood. We’ve always been clear on what we don’t want. We don’t want carpet, or the click, click, click of laminate.
So, I think a little snog of whisky is in order, not that I ever need a reason to have a couple fingers of single malt.
Ahem!
Ladies and gentlemen, if you would raise your glasses…to the good, wise people of All Rights Reserved!
And you Malahat Review people (sigh). Maybe next time.
For those who might like a wee taste of Doubting Yourself to the Bone -- I've added an excerpt in the "Selected Writing" section. Thanks to my publicist, the fabulous Debby de Groot out there in the center of the universe (AKA Toronto) for this idea. Now, go buy the book.

Well done, Thomas. Publication of any kind (especially for poetry) is always cause for celebration.

Thumbs up! A perfectly valid excuse for whisky, indeed.

Thanks!
This is a fairly new lit mag but I’ve got a lot of time for anyone, or any group, that starts up a literary magazine…You have to love it completely and unconditionally, and never expect to make any money.
Up yer kilt!
Namaste
