COLUMBUS book gets a new title!

Yes!! We have a new title for the Columbus book. After months of trying on titles and discarding all but a short list of possibilities, the good folks at Knopf-Doubleday in New York offered up a winner. It’s simple and beautifully reflects the essence of the book. I’m very pleased to announce the new title:

Waiting for Columbus

September 1, 2009 is the Canadian AND US release date for “Waiting for Columbus.” And for those of you who have heard of the band “Little Feat,” this is also the title of an absolutely seminal live recording by this band, and the title of the work of art that acts as album cover.

sparrow meditation continued

This morning – with the clouds an experiment
in the twenty-three million nuances of grey –
I went to pour the seed into the bottom of the feeder and
a single bird jumped from its resting perch to a new branch –
away from me but close enough that I was able to imagine
this vigilant bird perhaps remembered me – the man who put the seed.
This little hop scared me.
In the early morning dull light,
I’d thought the bird was one of last year’s apples –
not fallen – flora gone askew – an apple that can’t let go.
I stood there blinking at the bird blinking at me.
I finished filling the feeder and sparrow didn’t move.

Well, that is certainly no little feat in and of itself. I shall be eagerly a-Waiting for Columbus to appear in a fine literary distribution establishment in September.

Congrats!

September can’t come soon enough. Glad to hear that you’ve got a title in place, Thomas.

Hi Thomas,

I’d been reading all the bird stuff from you and your pals when I came upon this passage in a book I am reading. (The Maytrees by Annie Dillard):

“On the sill outside Maytree saw a chickadee whose breath was condensing just beyond its beak into a white pellet. It looked like a cartoon balloon that should inscribe chickadee wit inside”.

Wini,
That seals the deal I think. Annie Dillard saw chickadee breath!!!! Amazing. So, perhaps sparrows really do exist and are not some sort of vivid, collective dream…perhaps…
Thanks
