ED PO-FEST is ON!!!!

ED PO-FEST is on!!! The Edmonton Poetry Festival is in full swing!!! (edmontonpoetryfestival.com for details) Congrats to Michael Gravel, Jadon Rempel and Mary Pinkoski who blew the doors off CBC Radio (EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada) yesterday with poems created from three random words in about 40 minutes!!! All three poems were stunning examples from poets who kick at the darkness ‘til it bleeds daylight. Damn, you three are good!

Here's today's "sorbet" poem, which you too can get delivered to your "in-box" each Friday (see: "the sorbets" to sign up). It's FREE and secure....what a lovely way to move into the weekend...

the high, thin places

Take away love. Take away love-making. Remove intimacy. Give me my beret, a thick sweater, leather gloves, the good crisp fall weather, wood-smoke in the morning, strong coffee in a tin camp cup. And give me the pines – not yet covered with snow down here – stretching up the slopes, stopped only by granite and sky. And give me the flask, dented and travelled, filled with the cheapest single malt.

Turn your back on love. Turn away from loving and intimacy. Give me breathing in a mountain morning, bundled in the old cotton camp coat. Give me working the legs over rough, rising ground, through mossy forests, past clear water. Give me Anna’s Greek coffee on the deck, with sprinkles of snow flirting the day, the humming birds long gone south, and the high larches turning their golden colour in staggered swatches.

Give me the wisdom to be now. Let me be now, in the high, thin places. And let me share it with those I love. When you hold my hand and we walk in this place, and we are using all our senses, that is love – and your hand in mine, is love-making. And intimacy is nothing compared to this mountain being.
