I've been WONKED!

I’m in WONK!!!! For those who don’t know, WONK is a fairly new publication from the brilliant minds of Lucas and Amber Warren and stately/Plump publishing in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada. It is, in fact, Wetaskiwin’s only literary arts sheet.

Here’s the thing. They care about fonts. They list their first subscriber in the credits. They debunk the notion of purposely being cool and as a result, wind up being “Steve McQueen cool.” They are meticulous about the content and the font, and the design of this arts sheet called WONK. In fact, for your edification, here are the listed fonts for the upcoming issue: “ff dagny thin for headlines and “gentium book basic” for the text.

In the next little while, my story/poem/riff called Snow Meditation #3 will appear along with the works of Erica Marshall, rob mclennan, Frans Erickson, Ron Asp, Dixie Warren, Michelle Hay and Margot Soltice. Last month, poems from Michael Gravel, Jonathan Ball, Alex Boyd and Paul Pearson as well as photography by Robbyn Erickson and a drawing by Britanny Nelson were featured.

WONK, according to the website, will be distributed throughout Wetaskiwin each month from September 2009 until September 2010. I recommend you subscribe to WONK. They’ll send you a PDF of the sheet each month – FREE!!! Or, if you want WONK in the mailbox that hangs on the side of your house, you can do that too, for a modest fee (to cover postage). Click on one of the WONK links for more info.

I sincerely hope WONK continues beyond its September 2010 due-date. It’s a brilliant, beautiful and bold start. A grand artistic forum. The world is just a little bit cooler because of WONK. And with all this talk of global warming, it’s exactly what we need.
