Keyser Söze
January 6, 2008
Watching The Usual Suspects right now... Kevin Spacey is brilliant…and I am loving all the lovely and oblique references to Keyser Söze. The tension about this character just builds and builds. Just beautifully done.
I’ve done something to my shoulder. The right shoulder hurts like hell. No idea what it is, or how I did it. I worked the book today – scratched yet another prologue by moving it into the main body of the narrative. Tomorrow, I’ll work in the morning with the good Estima coffee in the press. Still looking for a title for the new book. Something with a hook, and still entirely appropriate. It is not easy this time out. Today, the book is called: “Gibraltar”. I like the simplicity of “Gibraltar”.

I am curious. Why do you say failed Buddhist? And I loved your book, “Doubing yourself to the bone.”

Deb,
I didn’t even notice the spelling error until you pointed it out.
Hey, thanks for liking the book. The new book is almost done. Wish I could tell you the name, but right now it changes daily. I am loving it right now, though. I love these characters and the story…being with them… listening to them…
The “Failed” Buddhist is a reference to the fact that I fail at compassion and kindness every day. I also fail at being in the moment every day. Perhaps all Buddhists are failed Buddhists in a way. I’d even hesitate to call myself a Buddhist because I eschew all organized religion. I am, however, drawn to philosophy of Buddhism….My practice derives from the philosophy, the ideas of Buddhism, as opposed to the actual religion. I hope that answers your question.

I’m the same way. I try to be compassionate everyday and I get in the way of it. I try to stay in the moment but find my brain flitting from one thing to another, my favorite being worst case scenarios.
So I don’t think a failed Buddhist, but a Buddhist who is still in training.
