Mayor's Celebration of the Arts and the City of Edmonton Book Prize
March 23, 2010
The Louster and I had a wonderful time at the Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts – here in Edmonton – last night. The entertainment was wonderful and the atmosphere had an electric feel to it. All the performers were great, the Yellow Ribbon Dancers, Jeremy Baumung and Ken Brown, the Franco-Albertan Alley Ouest and Third Street Hip-Hop Beat Studio were stand-outs!!! Jeremy Baumung and Ken Brown…whoa!!! I laughed and jerked a couple tears. It was that good! What a stunning excerpt they performed.
Franco-Albertan Alley Ouest proved that language is no barrier when it comes to music. Their music was wonderful…filled with joy and passion. They looked like they were having so much fun up there!! I wanted to dance. I was dancing in my seat.
I’m pleased to announce that Waiting for Columbus picked up The City of Edmonton Book Prize last night. It was a great short list. An honour to be short-listed. An even greater honour to get the award. Of course, I want you to pick up a copy of Waiting for Columbus (McClelland & Stewart in CAN, and Knopf-Doubleday in the US, and Picador in the UK) from an independent book store, if you can. But hey, while you’re there, pick up Ed Struzik’s The Big Thaw: Travels in the Melting North and Pierrette Requier’s Details From the Edge of the Village. Great Edmonton writers!
Here’s a big thank you to Audrey’s Books for sponsoring the City of Edmonton Book Prize since its inception!
At intermission, my lovely wife bought me a small portion of 25-year-old whiskey from the corner bar at the Windspear. Damn it was good. Smoky and peaty and sweet, and smooth as silk. A great celebratory drink. A great night all ‘round!!!
