The end of things....Toronto!

T he Raving Poets (here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) Rapture Series ends this coming Wednesday. The series finale should be a show and a half, with the naming of the next Raving Poets Top Model, the announcement of the new Raving Poets Idol, and Jack Bauer saving the day at the last second -- kicking the collective asses of those Stinkin' Russians. Seriously, this has been an amazing series…with a growing number of poets who continue to push boundaries, test limits, and grow!!! I am uber-proud to be associated with the Raving Poets scene. It’s not a club. It’s not a group where we have memberships. It exists as the space between the words of a poem. It’s fragile and ephemeral and beautiful. If you’re in Edmonton, come on by:

Heliconian Literary Lecture Series and moi

Okay…I said yes, or at least I will today, to an invitation to read at the World Famous Heliconian Literary Lecture Series in Toronto this fall. I'm thrilled actually. It's been years since I visited TO. I just hope they have a Starbucks there.

A sad note

I just found out that The 52nd Poem is about to go "out of print." I'll be using my option to buy a bunch but that's it. It's done. It was a beautiful run with this little book. Not sure how to say so long. But perhaps some sort of ceremony with good whisky and a cigar and mountains!!!

That is too bad! Such a fine book. When we are birthing them, we tend not to think of their ends, but alas, for most of us, the end does eventually arrive.

My first is currently hard to get, and unavailable. I finally got up the courage to ask, expecting to be told it was out-of-print, but was instead told it is “scheduled for reprint.” It has been in this state for a while, which COULD be another way of saying out of print, but with a certain amount of hope attached to it.

Anita,
Five years is a good long run.
Great Plains is a fabulous publisher!!!
I hope I get to work them again sometime.
I’ll send 52nd out in style, with portions of single malt…and mountains…

Onward…

This may be the digression of someone who isn’t yet in print, but I don’t quite understand the mourning…the book is still in circulation, isn’t it? At libraries and in second hand book shops and between friends…

A Starbucks in T-dot? There may be 1 or 2. Glad to hear about Heliconian.

Sad to hear that 52nd Poem is going out of print. It’s a fine book.

See you at the big whoop up tonight. The FINAL night for the RP’s. Ever.

Ariel,
Good reminder. Great reminder, actually. The mourning has more to do with cutting the tie to my first publisher…Yup, the book is still out there…(I know!!! Did some part of me think the publisher was going to keep the thing in stock, in its catalogue, forever?!?!?). But there is still this twinge of sadness. Don’t know…The end of a stage in a long journey.

Mike,
Packed house tonight for Raving! You were a great, great host! Funny, eloquent, gracious…The readers were amazing. The band, quirky and tilted. Loads of fun! The energy in the room….Over 60 people in a bar for poetry!!! Still blows my mind.
It was a great series. Next Wednesday is going to be weird without Raving…

Thomas,
Last night was awesome. Had so much fun. The band was freakin’ incredible. And I have to say that YOU delivered the poem of the night. A moving tribute to your father. Thanks, as always, for your words.
