Private jets, champagne and London hotels...
August 24, 2010
One day before London. The whole gang at Sorbet Central is pumped about the London trip. We’ve rented a private jet and three cases of the Widow Clicquot are chilling. Champagne over Greenland for breakfast! We’ve got rooms in a lovely boutique hotel in central London. I totally want to go out and buy an iPad but what the hell would I use it for? I’m a writer. This is not a writing machine. It was not designed for me. It’s beautiful and sleek and shiny but it’s not for me. It’s just not for writers.
Okay. I’m totally kidding about the private jet and the champagne. Everything else is true. Well, it’s factual. I’ll try and update this thing when I’m in London. But I’d just as soon shun the technology…I will write you a letter and put it in the post though, if you get your address to me today before midnight.

The iPad may not be for writers YET. There are some promising apps that pair the functionality of Dropbox with basic text editors. But I can’t imagine anyone writing large amounts of prose on the thing. A virtual keyboard would be unsatisfying in extended use. The iPad is certainly for readers, though. Or, I HOPE it is. Have fun in London!

I just finished reading Waiting For Columbus. I bought it because I was simply struck by the great soft back cover design, but had no idea there was a writer out there like you. So quirky and inventive, and beautifully written, I sincerely have not enjoyed a book this much this In The Skin Of A Lion. Unbelievable. Thankyou. Can’t wait for what’s next.
