Raving Poets movement kicks into its eighth year with a new series titled Heart Beat
(EDMONTON) The Raving Poets are eight. The eighth year of open-stage poetry, improvised music, and wine, begins March 5th. The Raving Poets, Edmonton’s longest-running open-stage poetry series, is about to launch into a 13-week spring session.
“If you’d said to me eight years ago that this thing would still be going, and pulling in audiences of 60 to 80 people a night, for poetry, I’d have said you were nuts,” says Raving Poets founding father, guitar player, Randall Edwards. “It’s a phenomenon. And for the guys in the band, it’s a labour of love.”
The Raving Poets mixes improvised music provided by the Raving Poets Band, with poetry. The experience becomes something beyond poetry, and something different than songs with lyrics. It’s a unique blending of art forms. Each poet is allowed one poem, maximum five minutes, and the band will match its music to the tone of the poem. “Ninety-nine per cent of the time, it works,” says Edwards. “Most of the time, it works incredibly well. These musicians are incredibly sensitive and they’ve had lots of practice. They’re really good at this.”
The Raving Poets have been featured on BRAVO, Book TV, CBC Radio (the key of A), and podcast to the entire world @ http://liveatthekasbar.com/
