Waiting for Columbus still number one, and we're off to TO
September 14, 2009
I went for a walk up Jasper Ave., the main avenue here in Edmonton, today, to one of my favourite bookstores, Audrey’s Books. (are there enough commas in this sentence???). The foot is almost healed, though still tender. They didn’t have my book up front. So I went to the fiction racks, curious about how many were there…and there’s this man standing there in front of the “Ts” holding the last copy of Waiting for Columbus. I look at him and decide to let him know what I think about the book he’s holding. “It’s a good book,” I say. “Oh, you enjoyed reading it?” Pause. “I wrote it,” I say, smiling like an idiot. “I always wanted to do that,” I add. “Thank you.” “Oh,” he says. “So now you’ve done it.” “Fifty-seven drafts and I still loved the book the last time I read it,” I say.
I saw him lined up at the till with my book in hand. Sunday, found Waiting for Columbus still in top spot – number one on the Bestseller chart in the Edmonton Journal. Lovely. I’m sure Margaret Atwood and Dan Brown are shaking in their beds at night…
We’re off to Toronto tomorrow morning. Columbus will be taking over this blog, and the Tweets. I’m taking him with me, giving him the laptop and a credit card and his own room at the hotel — well, an adjoining room. I just hope M&S will be okay when they get he bill for an extra room. He’s just a character in a book…how much could he possibly eat or drink??? How much trouble can a character get into in five days at the centre of the Universe? Well, we’re about to find out.
Laurie Greenwood’s reviews of Waiting for Columbus, on CBC, and GLOBAL TV, were wonderful!!! We love Laurie Greenwood. Laurie has been, and continues to be, an ardent supporter of writers and writing and books in this community. See: Laurie’s Book Company and listen to the the review.

—Si! Hola! Columbus here. The first thing I’m going to order from room service is a case of Heineken and a beautiful woman. Thanks for the opportunity to write, Mr. Trofimuk. Do I really have to call you “Mr. Trofimuk”? I mean really, you’re just the writer.
—If you will check the contract, you’ll see that this is stipulated.
—All right, all right. Mr. Trofimuk it is. Tomorrow is a new day and the first day of my life beyond Waiting for Columbus. I won’t let you down.
—Relax, Columbus. You’ll be fine.
—Sleep well, Mr. Trofimuk.
—You too, Columbus.
—First thing I’m going to do is change the name of the website to “Christopher Columbus; the man, the drunkard, the incredible lover.”
—Really?
—It’s mine until this tour is over.
—(sigh)

Columbus, thanks for your message. And yes, I am coming over. Flick the back light 3 times if they are gone, otherwise I will just wait in the garage.
Remember Thomas, in Toronto, it is never lupus!
